"Well, how old is the Great Pyramid?" asked Rick. "Some say it is 10,000 years old, long before Egypt was founded, while others say it is much younger."

Evidence. that's what Rick wanted. In fact, I do receive quite a few emails asking this same question.

So, if you were wondering, here are some fascinating facts.

DATING OF GREAT PYRAMID
Some scientists contend that the Great Pyramid itself tells the date of its construction (foundation).  

HOW OLD IS THE GREAT PYRAMID?

In the 19th century, the Astronomer Royal of Scotland, Professor Piazzi Smyth, spent 6 months camped near the Great Pyramid. He went to work with the mind of a Master Astronomer to solve some of the 
pyramid’s mysteries. Smyth explored the Descending Passage which pointed upward to the sky on the pyramid’s northern face. He found that it was set at an angle of 26 deg. 18 min. 10 sec. 

The eminent Sir John Herschel had discovered that this Descending Passage pointed to a Constellation of stars known as Draconis (“The Dragon”).  With careful astronomical calculation, Smyth now confirmed 
this.

While in the Descending Passage, Smyth was excited to find two “Scored Lines”, which pointed upwards at right angles. These indicated to an astronomer to examine their direction in the sky.

These “Scored Lines” were about 4 feet long.  Smyth was amazed at their precision. Having long been an astronomical transit observer, he felt that he was in the familiar surroundings of an observatory! Calculating carefully, he found that these “Scored Lines” pointed upwards, through the Pyramid, to the star Alcyone in the constellation known as “The Pleiades”.

Alcyone was regarded as the PIVOT of the solar system, around which all other “fixed stars” appear to revolve. It was called “The Central One”.

Professor Smyth made an exciting discovery.  At the SAME TIME that the Descending Passage was pointing to the POLE Star (Alpha Draconis), these “Scored Lines” were pointing to Alcyone, the “PIVOT” star.  That conjunction took place on September 22nd, 2144 B.C.

ALCYONE – THE “FOUNDATION STAR”

Here, fixed into the pyramid’s construction, was a definite date - 2144 BC.In the absence of evidence to the contrary, we may now ask, could the “scored line” indicate 2144 BC as defining the EPOCH OF THE PYRAMID’S FOUNDATION? 

And now a remarkable fact comes into play. Tradition from the Euphrates region (Mesopotamia) seems to identify Alcyone with the ceremony of FOUNDATION-LAYING. This is significant when you discover that the Pyramid builders have been traced to a Euphratean origin.

Furthermore, a researcher into ancient astronomy informs us that  “Alaparos (the second of the ten antediluvian kings of Euphratean legend) is equated with Alcyone (Tauri).

The Euphratean astronomical abbreviation of the Sign is Te or Te te, the highly abraded form of the Akkadian dimmena (‘foundation stone’) = Assyrian, timmena timmen timme-tim tem te (‘foundation’).

The ‘Foundation’ star (Temennu) is the Pleiad, or particularly Alcyone.” (Brown, Primitive Constellations, vol. 1, p.57) Remember Betty and Barney Hill were abducted by Pleiadian’s and Betty remembered the star map on the wall of their ship. It was later studied by a brilliant woman Marjorie fish who created a 10 point match indicating that the Pleiadian star cluster was their home base. Apparently they have been coming here a very long time.

Was the pointer to Alcyone the “FOUNDATION Star” fixed in stone to record the date of the “FOUNDATION” of the Pyramid?  A strong probability.

The “scored line” defines actual observations at midnight of two successive Autumn Equinoxes, that of 2145 BC. and that of 2144 BC. These observations fix the astronomical zero for reckoning of days, as associated with midnight.  They likewise define the commencement of the Pyramid's solar year at the Autumnal Equinox.

DATE OF THE GREAT FLOOD ALSO DEFINED

According to researcher Basil Stewart, the Egyptian “Book of the Dead”, suggested that the Ascending Passages would represent “years for inches" in the Pyramid.  (Stewart, The Mystery of the Great Pyramid, pp 17 -19)

From the “Scored Lines” of 2144 BC,  the passage was measured  - until at 200 inches a dark granite plug was reached.  Calculating on the “inch to the year” scale, this brought interesting results.

If these 200 inches truly represented 200 years, then the conclusion was astonishing.  Why? Because going back 200 years before 2144 BC takes us back to the date the Great Flood ended in 2344 BC!

Had this dark plug been set in place to symbolize the darkness which came over the earth at that time?

Then emerged something almost as startling.

The star group Aquarius (“the Waterman”) was also found to be featuring in the astronomy of the Pyramid. Ancient peoples associated AQUARIUS with the waters of the GREAT FLOOD.

The accepted date for the ending of the Great Flood is 2344 BC. And - was it by coincidence or by design -  the SAME “Scored Lines” that pointed to Alcyone the Foundation Star in 2144 BC, also pointed to the precise spot in the sky where AQUARIUS would have been directly overhead in 2344 BC! 

Just think about that.

I am NOT saying that the Great Pyramid was already built before the Flood, with its “scored lines” standing there pointing to Aquarius while the Flood was on. No, the pyramid was built AFTER the Great Flood. (Its measurements incorporate the length of the new, post-Flood 365¼ day year, and NOT the 
pre-Flood 360 day year.) And the “scored lines” were positioned to commemorate an event that had already occurred.

Let it be understood that I am not endorsing such things as predictions of the future in pyramid measurements, as some do. We are simply attesting to some known facts of history.

THE HISTORIC WAR BETWEEN GOOD AND EVIL

The ancient races believed that the devil (represented by a serpent, or dragon) had hijacked Planet Earth and entrapped  mankind into rebellion against the Creator. They also recorded this understanding in the pictures of the constellations on their star maps.

In 2144 BC, Thuban Alpha of the DRACONIS Constellation (representing the DRAGON, identified as representing SATAN) shone down the Descending Passage towards the so-called “Bottomless Pit” at the bottom.  In the ancient world, Satan (Lucifer) was understood to have caused man’s descent to darkness, desolation and death.

That star of the Dragon constellation, shining over the Descending Passage, symbolised SATANIC INFLUENCE.

By contrast the “Scored Lines” pointed to the PLEIADES which symbolised a sweetening influence.  Hence in the old book of Job we read: Can you bind the SWEET INFLUENCES of Pleiades? (Job 38:31) 
      
In ancient traditions, the Pleiades star group was associated with benign influence and blessedness.

So in this sense, the Great Pyramid encapsulates the struggle between Good and Evil. Did they see the uplifting influence of the Pleiades as a symbol of the Creator’s intervention to save man from the results of his own folly?  Was this a message that man need not be always on a slippery downward path but can look upward?

This much is certain. The ancient world was very conscious of the two opposing forces behind world events.

The influence of Evil, well illustrated by the Descending Passage with the Dragon Constellation shining down it, was depicted by writers such as Isaiah: How you  are fallen,.. O Lucifer  [The Dragon].  For you have said in your heart, ‘I will exalt my throne above the stars  of  God:  I  will  sit . . . in the sides of the NORTH.’ (Isaiah 14: 12 15)

Modern Astronomy has confirmed that midnight, September 22nd, 2144 BC, was the date when Alcyone of the “sweet” Pleiades was in position over the “Scored Lines”, just at the same time when Thuban-Alpha of the “evil” Draconis was shining down the Descending Passage to the “Pit”.

Thus Astronomy gives a date which may have great significance for the Great Pyramid.
      
CALENDAR CLUES TO THE AGE OF THE GREAT PYRAMID

The ancient calendars had a 360 day year. In harmony with this,  the earth was divided into 360 degrees. The ancient Chinese calendar was 360 days long. So was the Babylonian. And the Roman. And the Mayan. And the Indian. And the Egyptian.

But later, every nation changed its calendar. 

This rearrangement of the calendars in antiquity has long been a puzzle to scholars. Why did ALL those  ancient nations change their calendars from years of 360 days to 365 ¼ days?

BECAUSE THEY LATER GOT CLEVER – OR IS THERE ANOTHER REASON?

My neighbour Rob Payne thought he had come up with the answer. “Oh, I can explain that,” he said. “The ancients first proposed a rough system of yearly count, and later, when their mathematical knowledge increased, they refined it.”

Nice try, Rob. Except we’ve now discovered that those ancient peoples were already excellent astronomers and mathematicians - yes, even when they created the 360 day calendar.

For example, the Maya have left us some of their calculations. They computed the synodal period of the moon as 29.5209 days, as accurately as we can calculate today with our sophisticated equipment. Their degree of accuracy would surely not have been less for the year.

Now let me ask you: Why would so many cultures in such widely scattered regions of the world all have made the very same mistake for the length of the year, and then all rectify it in the same way?

I know some folk like to think the Great Pyramid of Egypt is much older. But realistically, there is good reason to believe  that it was built within a few hundred years after the Flood. The Great Pyramid accurately stands in the center of the land surface of the earth as it NOW exists and must have existed at the time the pyramid was built.

It could be called a huge planet marker, a giant survey post. It marks both the longitude and latitude at which there is more land and less sea than at any other meridian on earth.  Evidently the builders were well acquainted with the exact amount of land on the surface of the earth as it existed AFTER the Flood (not before), as well as its geographical distribution.. This suggests that results of the post-Flood global survey were already in.

It would also explain why the NEW LENGTH OF THE YEAR was also incorporated into the measurements of the Great Pyramid.

The external features, dimensions and units of this pyramid together give precisely and accurately every essential value of the earth’s PRESENT motions and orbit – not the PREVIOUS one that existed before 2345 BC.

This identifies the Great Pyramid as a post-Flood structure. Definitely not pre-Flood.

For example, intentionally or by accident, the circuit distance around its base, measured direct from corner to corner, is 36,524.22 primitive inches. This is exactly 100 times 365.2422 - the value in days of our solar year.

Even though the calendar was still 360 days long. This is so astonishing; we must take off our hats to those early post-Flood scientists. They were ahead of us in many ways. There was no rough count; it 
was precise to the ten thousandth of a decimal point.

WHAT REALLY HAPPENED

A tablet discovered at Tanus in the Nile Delta in 1866 reveals that in the ninth year of Ptolemy Euergetes (c. 237 BC), the priests at Canopus decreed that it was “necessary to harmonize the calendar according to the present arrangement of the world.”

The reason the ancients gave for the re-calculated calendars was not that they were in error, nor that they had improved on more primitive techniques.  It was that there was a “changed order of things.”

And with each passing century, the calendar misalignment had become more pronounced. The nations that sprang up after the Flood with a ready-made culture, inherited their knowledge basically from the world that was wiped out at the Deluge. They continued where Noah left off. They inherited, along with everything else, the antediluvian (pre-Flood) calendar of 360 days.

Was there, at the time of the Deluge, a change not only in the planet’s axis, but a change in its orbit, which in turn caused the lengthened year?

It does bring to mind that curious biblical reference to the Creator, who was believed to “move the earth out of her place.”  (Isaiah 13:13)

EVERYTHING THEY TEACH US IS WRONG...

PREHISTORIC AND ANCIENT HUMAN SOCIETIES

Almost everything they teach us about the ancient history is wrong: origin of men, civilizations and pyramids. Homo sapiens sapien is not a result of the evolution and biologists will never find a “missing link”, because the intelligent man is product of genetic engineering. Sumerians are not the beginning of the civilized men, but rather beginning of the most recent cycle of humanity. And finally, original pyramids, most superior and oldest, were made by advanced builders who knew energy, astronomy, geometry and construction better than we do.

In order to understand the ancient monuments, we need to view them through three realms: physical, energy and spiritual. Our scientific instruments are simply not adequate to explain the purpose of oldest pyramids. Mainstream scientists, archaeologists, historians and anthropologists with their rigid approach, are often main obstacle for scientific progress.

In the meantime, mainstream scientists try to fit those monuments into their time coordinates, falsifying the truth.

Two hundred Cahokia pyramids (USA) show astronomical knowledge of the builders who moved several millions tons of construction materials and who knew the difference between cosmic and magnetic north. Mayan world (Central America) is an example of the knowledge of Universe. Our Solar system circles Milky Way and that 26-thousand years cycle (“long count calendar”) affects all living life on our Planet. Anasazies, ancestors of Pueblo Indians (Southern USA), didn’t need alphabet or physical communication means to recognize danger in different dimensions coming from the depth of Universe.

As long as they stay within the box, mainstream archaeologists will never be able to explain tooling and logistic needed to build stone heads on Easter Islands, machined granite blocks of Akapana pyramid complex in Bolivia or function of chambers in Giza pyramids.

Stone spheres of western Mexico, southern Costa Rica, Easter Island or twenty locations in remote Bosnia-Herzegovina, are obvious proof of understanding and manipulating of shapes and energy fields in the distant past.

On top of all that, discovery of the Bosnian Valley of the Pyramids is telling us that we don’t know our Planet. We might go to the Moon, but we still need to explore our Mother Earth. More secrets wait to be uncovered and, with the ancient knowledge, help us reach our balance back.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE BOSNIAN PYRAMID DISCOVERIES

In April 2005 I first traveled to the town of Visoko, 20 miles northwest from Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina. My attention was caught by two regularly shaped hills, which I later named the Bosnian Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon. For thousands of years locals have considered those hills to be natural phenomena because they were covered by 3-foot of soil and vegetation. However, when I first saw their triangular faces, same slopes, obvious corners and orientation toward the cardinal points, I knew that they had to be constructed by a force other than nature. Since I had been investigating pyramids for decades I knew that the pyramids found in China, Mexico, Belize, Guatemala or El Salvador presented the same case of pyramids covered by dirt and vegetation.

In 2005 work was begun on this project and I paid construction companies and geologists to do the core drilling and geo-morphological analysis. I announced to the world, at the press conference in Sarajevo in October 2005, that the first pyramids in Europe had been discovered.

Shortly thereafter we established the non-profit Archaeological Park: Bosnian Pyramid of the Sun Foundation and since that time the pyramid investigations in Bosnia have become the world’s largest inter-disciplinary scientific project in the field of archaeology. We have spent over 340.000 man-hours in archaeological excavation, sample testing and radiocarbon dating in the period from 2005 to 2013. We’ve determined that the Bosnian Valley of the Pyramids consists of five pyramidal structures discovered to date which I named: The Bosnian Pyramids of the Sun, Moon, Dragon, Mother Earth and Love. The site also includes a tumulus complex and a huge underground labyrinth.

This discovery is historic and changes our knowledge of the early history of Europe for several reasons:

• These are the first pyramids discovered in Europe
• The site includes the largest pyramid structure in the world—The Bosnian Pyramid of the Sun - with its height of over 220 meters it’s much higher than the Great Pyramid of Egypt (147 meters).
• The Bosnian Pyramid of the Sun has, according to the Bosnian Institute for Geodesy, the most precise orientation towards cosmic north with the error of 0 degrees, 0 minutes and 12 seconds.
• The Bosnian Pyramid of the Sun is completely covered by artificially made concrete blocks. The properties of the concrete, including extreme hardness (up to 133 MPs) and low water absorption (around 1%), are, according to the scientific institutions for materials in Bosnia, Italy and France, far superior to modern concrete materials.
• The pyramids are covered by soil which is, according to the State Institute for Agro-pedology from Sarajevo (Bosnia-Herzegovina), between 12,000-15,000 years old. Radiocarbon dating of the organic material found on the top of the concrete blocks and below 3-foot layer of dirt and clay, performed by Institute for carbon dating from Kiev, Ukraine in August 2012, confirmed that construction was there already 24,800 +/- 200 years ago. These finding confirms that the Bosnian pyramids are also the oldest known pyramids on the planet.
• Beneath the Bosnian Valley of the Pyramids there is an extensive underground tunnel and chamber network which runs for a total of more than ten miles.
• Ceramic sculptures have been discovered in the underground labyrinth with a mass of up to 18,000 pounds which makes them the largest found so far in the ancient world.

Several teams of physicists and electrical engineers from Croatia, Italy, Serbia and Finland have detected and measured an energy beam (electromagnetic in nature) coming through the top of the Bosnian Pyramid of the Sun. The radius of the beam is 4.5 meters with a frequency of 28 kHz, strength of 3,9 V. The beam is continuous and its strength grows as it moves up and away from the pyramid. This phenomenon contradicts the known laws of physic and technology. This is the first proof of non-herzian technology on the Planet. It seems that the pyramid-builders created a perpetual motion machine a long time ago and this “energy machine” is still working.

Also, beam of ultrasound has been discovered on the top of the Bosnian Pyramid of the Sun of same frequency which comes in regular blocks 9.3333 Hz away from each other with the peaks of 28.3000 kHz. These are the properties of the energy machines, not natural pyramid hills. By the end of 2012 source of the energy has been located 1.5 miles under the pyramid with est. power of more than 10 kW.

In the underground labyrinth, in 2010, three chambers were discovered and a small blue lake. Energy screening shows that the ionization level of 43,000 negative ions is 200 times higher than the average concentration outside which makes the underground chambers into “healing rooms”.

Further electromagnetic detection in 2011 confirmed that levels of negative radiation through the Hartman, Curry and Schneider grids are equal to zero in the tunnels. There was no technical radiation (from power lines and/or other technology) found in the tunnels and no cosmic radioactivity. Ceramic sculptures are positioned over the underground water streams and the negative energy is transformed into positive. All of these experiments point to the underground labyrinth as one of the most secure underground constructions in the world and this makes it an ideal place for the body’s rejuvenation and regeneration.

Two hundred years of Egyptology has not produced a satisfactory answer to the question of what the real purpose was for the oldest and most superior pyramids.

In only six years, our research in Bosnia has applied inter-disciplinary scientific methods, to look at this complex through the physical, energetic and spiritual dimensions. We have had pioneering results which affects the entire sphere of knowledge and Pyramid Science. Our history is changing with each new discovery.

About the Book
I plotted our sun’s course through space to discover that our sun was born in the constellation Orion. After the planets were formed Earth was covered with a five-mile-thick coating of ice one billion years with an atmospheric pressure of over 750-pounds per square inch. Sunlight could not penetrate such an atmosphere extending over 3,000-miles above the planet. Right now if you go up 50-miles you are in space. 


We eventually drifted near the 3.5-solar mass Sirius multiple star-system. Little Sirius B (1.5 solar masses) orbiting Sirius A at 8 to 12 astronomical units (AU) grabbed hold of our sun and putt it into a nice circular orbit around Sirius A. (One astronomical unit is the distance between the Earth and the Sun of 93,000,000 miles.)


Our sun does not have enough power to keep us out of the ice ages. It was the additional light and heat from Sirius star system that melted the billion-year Huronian Glaciation where mile-deep sheets of ice covered the ocean and a 5-mile deep ice covered the single continent known as Pangaea.

The little white dwarf Sirius B, the size of the Earth putting out more than 100 times the ultraviolet light of our Sun is the only object out there with enough power to break through ancient Earth's thick 750 PSI thick 3,000-mile deep atmosphere to get life started in the oceans.


You got to understand the white dwarfs put out tremendous, incomprehensible energy in the invisible ultraviolet light spectrum of 350 to 400 nano meter range and we are traveling toward Sirius A and B right now at 7.5 kilometer per second. 


Diatoms that can multiply eight times in 24 hours given 24-hours of light from multiple star systems and enough carbon and warm temperatures filled up the ocean with their dead bodies (calcium carbonate) created most all our crude oil. They are also responsible for releasing most of our free oxygen. The evolved different shapes to take advantage of different wave lengths of UV light in at different depths in the oceans.


Over time the 750 PSI carbon dioxide atmosphere was laid down as coal, oil and limestone using photosynthesis and light from Sirius A and B. 


About seven years ago scientist took plaster casts of dinosaur chest cavities to determine that they couldn't' live in today's ratified 14.5 pounds per square inch atmosphere. The atmosphere at the time of the dinosaurs had to be between 30 and 60 PSI to keep them alive. Everything was more lush and rich in ancient times and there were at least three suns in the sky. 


During the Carboniferous Era 350 to 400-million years ago, the atmosphere had to be between 300 to 400 pounds per square inch and about 1,500 miles deep. Out sun could not pierce such a thick atmosphere. In fact, you would probably never see the sun if you were standing on Earth at that time. The Carboniferous Era created limestone layers up to 12,500 feet thick and coal layers 100 feet thick. Most of our oil was laid down during this time.


There is only one thing out there powerful enough to penetrate a 1,500-mild deep atmosphere and we are heading toward it right now at 7.5 kilometers per second. It puts out more than 100 times the ultraviolet light of our sun. It is in a 54-year orbit around a two-solar mass star that puts out four to six times the light of our sun. This star system is only 8 light years away and our orbit period is 105,000 years which matches our present Ice Age cycle.


I used an online impact computer to determine the impact would depress Earth's crust 5 kilometers and it would bounce back up to 1.3 kilometers. The Arctic Ocean has an average depth of 1.3 kilometers and a deep area of 5 kilometers. The impact tilted Earth 23.5 degrees killing off all the tribes, camels, horses, and mastodons in North America and piled up heaps of bones in Siberia. Mastodons were found quick frozen with green food in their mouths and in their stomachs. I believe that this was the same event 12,500 years ago that gave Noah a wild ride to the mountains of Ararat.  

If you take a protractor and connect the Great lakes with Lake Victoria, Great Bear Lake and Great Slave lake and extend it around to cover the fjords of Norway and Great Britain the center of the ark will be near the south tip of Greenland. During the last Ice Age the ice covered parts of Kansas and Georgia but California and the Redwoods were spared. This is more evidence that Earth's rotational pole was near the south part of Greenland. 


If you look at Antarctica the ice cap extended to Hobart Island of Australia and the fjords of the south island of New Zealand. Note how the Great Bite of Australia has a constant radius as if carved out by a giant ice cap.


Parts of Antarctica were not covered with ice and were mapped by the ancient Egyptians or Atlanteans as evidenced by the extremely accurate Piri Reis map. 
  

Bouncing the Moon off the Earth put it out into a more circular orbit around the sun causing the year to be 5 1/4 days longer. It used to be 360 days--the same number as the number of degrees in a circle.Tilting Earth 23.5 degrees allowed sunlight to thaw back the ice caps 1,600 miles doubling arable land and sunlight to penetrate the oceans at a higher angel of incidence. This doubled the plankton growth and fish populations all of which made the Earth more inhabitable for larger populations of humans and animals. 


If you rotate the globe to where the Hawaiian Island chain is parallel to the equator you can see where the rotational pole used to be near the south tip of Greenland. That is why Greenland is still covered with ice today.

The moon chapter is very difficult to understand. I couldn't wrap my mind around the fact that the moon was responsible for tilting the Earth because I was taught in grade school. However, using basic logic it is the only object up there with enough mass to tilt Earth in 20 minutes. Lake Titicaca was at sea level but the antipode effect pushed it up 10,000 feet. Antarctica was also raised up several thousand feet.


The gravity of the moon of 2 E 20 Joules per second increased volcanism which replenished Earth atmosphere with more Co2 and heated up the core of the Earth to warm it. There is so much more that I can't write it here. You have to get the book...


I know many of you will not believe any of this and I didn't either--until I did the research. It started on Google Earth when I was looking impact evidence in mountain ranges with a constant radius.

I worked a whole year on this chapter and discovered much more additional data that reinforces my idea of when, where and why it was brought into orbit around Earth.

The Earth Without the Moon

The period when the Earth was Moonless is probably the most remote recollection of mankind. Democritus and Anaxagoras taught that there was a time when the Earth was without the Moon.⁽¹⁾ Aristotle wrote that Arcadia in Greece, before being inhabited by the Hellenes, had a population of Pelasgians, and that these aborigines occupied the land already before there was a moon in the sky above the Earth; for this reason they were called Proselenes.⁽²⁾
Apollonius of Rhodes mentioned the time “when not all the orbs were yet in the heavens, before the Danai and Deukalion races came into existence, and only the Arcadians lived, of whom it is said that they dwelt on mountains and fed on acorns, before there was a moon.” ⁽³⁾
Plutarch wrote in The Roman Questions: “There were Arcadians of Evander’s following, the so-called pre-Lunar people.”⁽⁴⁾ Similarly wrote Ovid: “The Arcadians are said to have possessed their land before the birth of Jove, and the folk is older than the Moon.” ⁽⁵⁾ Hippolytus refers to a legend that “Arcadia brought forth Pelasgus, of greater antiquity than the moon.”⁽⁶⁾ Lucian in his Astrology says that “the Arcadians affirm in their folly that they are older than the moon.”⁽⁷⁾
Censorinus also alludes to the time in the past when there was no moon in the sky.⁽⁸⁾
Some allusions to the time before there was a Moon may be found also in the Scriptures. In Job 25:5 the grandeur of the Lord who “Makes peace in the heights” is praised and the time is mentioned “before [there was] a moon and it did not shine.” Also in Psalm 72:5 it is said: “Thou wast feared since [the time of] the sun and before [the time of] the moon, a generation of generations.” A “generation of generations” means a very long time. Of course, it is of no use to counter this psalm with the myth of the first chapter of Genesis, a tale brought down from exotic and later sources.
The memory of a world without a moon lives in oral tradition among the Indians. The Indians of the Bogota highlands in the eastern Cordilleras of Colombia relate some of their tribal reminiscences to the time before there was a moon. “In the earliest times, when the moon was not yet in the heavens,” say the tribesmen of Chibchas.⁽⁹⁾
There are currently three theories of the origin of the moon:
1) The Moon originated at the same time as the Earth, being formed substantially from the same material, aggregating and solidifying.
2) The Moon was formed not in the vicinity of the Earth, but in a different part of the solar system, and was later captured by the Earth.
3) The Moon was originally a portion of the terrestrial crust and was torn out, leaving behind the bed of the Pacific.
All three theories claim the presence of the Moon on an orbit around the Earth for billions of years. Mythology may supply each of these views with some support (Genesis I for the first view; the birth of Aphrodite from the sea for the third view; Aphrodite’s origin in the disruption of Uranus, and also the violence of Sin—the Babylonian Moon—seems to support the second view).
Since mankind on both sides of the Atlantic preserved the memory of a time when the Earth was without the Moon, the first hypothesis, namely, of the Moon originating simultaneously with the Earth and in its vicinity, is to be excluded, leaving the other two hypotheses to compete between themselves.
We have seen that the traditions of diverse peoples offer corroborative testimony to the effect that in a very early age, but still in the memory of mankind, no moon accompanied the Earth.⁽¹⁰⁾ Since human beings already peopled the Earth, it is improbable that the Moon sprang from it: there must have existed a solid lithosphere, not a liquid earth. Thus while I do not claim to know the origin of the Moon, I find it more probable that the Moon was captured by the Earth. Such an event would have occurred as a catastrophe.⁽¹¹⁾ If the Moon’s formation took place away from the Earth,⁽¹²⁾ its composition may be quite different.
There is no evidence to suggest whether the Moon was a planet, a satellite of another planet, or a comet at the time of its capture by the Earth. Whatever atmosphere it may have had⁽¹³⁾ was pulled away by the Earth, by other contacting bodies, or dissipated in some other way.
Since the time the Moon began to accompany the Earth, it underwent the influence of contacts with comets and planets that passed near the Earth in subsequent ages. The mass of the Moon being less than that of the Earth, the Moon must have suffered greater disturbances in cosmic contacts. During these contacts the Moon was not carried away: this is due to the fact that no body more powerful than the Earth came sufficiently close to the Moon to take it away from the Earth for good; but in the contacts that took place the Moon was removed repeatedly from one orbit to another.
The variations in the position of the Moon can be read in the variations in the length of the month. The length of the month repeatedly changed in subseqent catastrophic events—and for this there exists a large amount of supporting evidence. In these later occurrences the Moon played a passive role, and Zeus in the Iliad advised it (Aphrodite) to stay out of the battle in which Athene and Ares (Venus and Mars) were the main contestants.

A Brighter Moon

Many traditions persist that at some time in the past the Moon was much brighter than it is now, and larger in appearance than the Sun. In many rabbinical sources it is stated that the Sun and the Moon were equally bright at first.⁽¹⁾ The same statement was made to de Sahagun by the aborigines of the New World: “the Sun and the moon had equal light in the past.” ⁽²⁾ At the other end of the world the Japanese asserted the same: the Nihongi Chronicle says that in the past “the radiance of the moon was next to that of the sun in splendor.” ⁽³⁾
Traditions of many peoples maintain that the Moon lost a large part of its light and became much dimmer than it had been in earlier ages.⁽⁴⁾
In order that the Sun and the Moon should give off comparable light, the Moon must have had an atmosphere with a high albedo (refracting power)⁽⁵⁾ or it must have been much closer to the earth. In the latter case the Moon would have appeared larger than the Sun. In fact, the Babylonian astronomers computed the visible diameter of the Sun as only two-thirds of the visible diameter of the Moon, which makes a relation of four to nine for the illuminating surfaces. This measure surprised modern scholars, who are aware of the exactness of the measurements made by the Babylonian astronomers and who reason that during the eclipses one can easily observe the approximate equality of the visible disks.⁽⁶⁾

The Worship of the Moon

Because of its size and also because of the events which accompanied the first appearance of the Moon, many ancient peoples regarded the Moon as the chief of the two luminaries. “The sun was of smaller importance than the moon in the eyes of the Babylonian astrologers.” ⁽¹⁾
The Assyrians and the Chaldeans referred to the time of the Moon-god as the oldest period in the memory of the people: before other planetary gods came to dominate the world ages, the Moon was the supreme deity. Such references are found in the inscriptions of Sargon II (ca. -720)⁽²⁾ and Nabonidus (ca. -550).⁽³⁾ The Babylonian Sin—the Moon—was a very ancient deity: Mount Sinai owes its name to Sin.
The Moon, appearing as a body larger than the Sun, was endowed by the imagination of the peoples with a masculine role, while the Sun was assigned a feminine role. Many languages reserved a masculine name for the Moon.⁽⁴⁾ It was probably when the Moon was removed to a greater distance from the earth and became smaller to observers on the earth, that another name, usually feminine, came to designate the Moon in most languages.⁽⁵⁾
